David Dunlop is one of the great figures of fundraising.  Director of Major Gifts at Cornell University for many years, Dave has become a great spokesman on the art of asking. Paradoxically, from Dave’s point of view, the best asks are the non-asks.

“If we’re primarily talking about money, we’re lost. We’re talking about doing good. We’re inviting people in to participate in some of the living ideas that make a great deal of difference.”

“For me, the ideal solicitation is one where there isn’t a moment of asking, at least not on the part of the solicitor. The asking comes from the friend who says, “What is it going to take for us to do this.” You can imagine, there’s a good deal of work that goes into  sharing with a friend to bring us to that moment.”

These wonderful pieces of wisdom come from a series of videos Dave did for Cornell University.  You can see them by clicking here.
